Bottlenose Dolphins Port Stephens NSW Australia

Around one hundred resident bottlenose dolphins live in Port Stephens on the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia. They are wild dolphins and watching their complex behaviour has captivated the crew of Imagine Cruises of Nelson Bay who know so much about them and are keen to share many dolphin stories. It is so interesting to watch them that many people return with their friends to go on a dolphin watching tour with Imagine Cruises time and time again.

The bottlenose dolphins on this photo are females with their calves. Female bottlenose dolphins live in groups of 6 to 8 adults joining in larger pods when foraging on large schools of fish. The female dolphins are in charge of the education of the youngsters and will pass on their knowledge of how to fish and how to relate to others in their complex society.

Young male bottlenose dolphins will leave the female group at the age of 2 to 3 years old to hang around with other young males until the age of 7 to 8. At this time they will have chosen another male, or sometimes 2 others and will spend the rest of their life together in what is called an "alliance".
