Bottlenose Dolphins Port Stephens NSW Australia

Scientific classification of Dolphins: Dolphins belong to the suborder Odontoceti (toothed whales) of the order Cetacea. The common bottlenose dolphin is classified as Tursiops truncatus and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin is classified as Tursiops aduncus. The three species of common dolphin are classified in the genus Delphinus. The five species of spotted dolphins belong to the Stenella genus. The six species collectively referred to as lags belong to the genus Lagenorhynchus. The Irrawaddy river dolphin is classified as Orcaella brevirostris. The Amazon river dolphin is classified as Inia geoffrensis, the Indian river dolphin as Platanista gangetica, the Chinese river dolphin as Lipotes vexillifer, and the Franciscana as Pontoporia blainvillei.

These dolphins are shown in the surf off "Bennett's Beach" in Providence Bay just outside Port Stephens. They are coastal bottlenose dolphins from inside the Bay, easily identifiable by their dorsal fins.

The Port Stephens resident bottlenose dolphins don't leave the Bay area all that often but at some times of the year when there are more fish outside, or when there is too much traffic in Port Stephens, they can be found on the other side of the headlands like these in the photo.

The Port Stephens area of the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia is pristine and beautiful... you really can enjoy the scenery but only vessels with offshore licenses like Imagine Cruises can take you there.

This photo was taken by Simon Allan from Macquarie University. He conducted the DREAM (Dolphin Research Education And Management) research aimed at the protection and conservation of our local dolphins and his research is currently being analyzed by NPWS before being presented to the Dolphin Watch Association and other tour operators for comments.
