Bottlenose dolphins are very efficient playful swimmers. They can make very short turns at high speed and swim at up to 15 knots in spurts when chasing fish or one another. Much faster again are their offshore cousins the Oceanic common dolphins, capable of speeds of over 30 knots.
The water of Port Stephens is really clean and clear except after long, heavy rainy periods. For most of the year the white sandy floor of the Bay will reflect the light and dolphins seem to be suspended in it. This effect is really accentuated around the shallow sand banks.
With a draft of only one meter Imagine Cruises vessel can follow dolphins into the shallows where other types of vessels might be restricted to go. There are beautiful parts of the Bay like the entrance to the Myall River, Corrie Island and the sand bars which cover close to a third of the area of the eastern part of Port Stephens.
