Bottlenose Dolphins Port Stephens NSW Australia

Port Stephens on the NSW North Coast of Australia has a population of about one hundred coastal bottlenose dolphins. These dolphins are resident here in Port Stephens and rarely leave the Bay. Unlike dolphins in captivity the Port Stephens bottlenose dolphins display one of the most complex behaviors in the animal world and are extremely interesting to watch.

At birth bottlenose dolphins, like humans, don't know much about the world. Their peers will pass on most of their knowledge to the young.

The bottlenose dolphins seen on this photo seem like they are waiting to be fed... of course this behavior is not very often seen in Port Stephens where bottlenose dolphins are wild and able to feed themselves. They eat a lot of fish about... 10kgs per dolphin per day. It is actually forbidden by the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) to feed the dolphins in Port Stephens as research has shown than it is detrimental to their natural behavior.
