This photo is of Bluey the Groper - Blue groper are male, the female are brown and smaller. Should the males disappear in a particular area, the larger females will change sex and turn into males. Groper live in rocky outcrops and love to feed on sea urchins. Bluey the Groper was photographed in the marine reserve off Halifax Beach at Nelson Bay, mid-north coast NSW. This Port Stephens nature reserve was created to protect some beautiful sponge gardens and bed of soft coral.
The marine flora and fauna is rich along Nelson Head and Fly Point, but the real treasures lie through the heads around the offshore islands of Port Stephens, Cabbage Tree Island, Fingal Island and Brougthon Island.
