Shoal Bay - Tourism Port Stephens NSW Australia

Shoal Bay on Port Stephens is supposedly named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie because of the sand shoals that exist there. During WWII, Tomaree Head became a strategic military coastal defence post. Thousands of American and Australian troops trained here for amphibious landings in the South Pacific. In 1949 the Department of Health purchased land and buildings from the Department of Defence for the establishment of Tomaree Lodge, a facility for intellectually disabled people.

Shoal Bay is has now become a busy little Mid North Coast NSW tourist mecca with hotels, shops and restaurants fringing the beautiful beach. A great place for families to visit. At the eastern end of Shoal Bay lies Tomaree Head and a short (but steep) bush walk will take you to a viewing platform at the top for magnificent views over Port Stephens. You can see as far as Seal Rocks in the north and Newcastle in the south (about 50 kilometres in each direction)! You can often spot migrating humpback whales during season.
